A

Affirmations: A belief that positive and assertive thoughts will influence people and reality.

Agate: Connection to Earth energy, courage, emotional balance, grounding, harmony, healing, love, peace, protection,, stability, strength, support, throat chakra. Types: blue lace agate, dendritic agate, fire agate, moss agate.

Air: One of the four (or five) elements; element of the East; associated with intuition, learning, thought, and knowledge.

 Allspice: Use to attract money and luck, as well as to heal acne, arthritis and digestion. Allspice can also increase circulation to your skin and freshen breath.

Altar: A table/surface where you can place all of your magickal tools/ingredients and use as your sacred space to perform ritual and magick.

Amber: Anxiety relief, attraction – especially of lasting love, beauty, clearing the mind, digestion, dissolving negativity, drawing off toxins, eliminating fears, fertility, headache relief, healing pain and disease, helping with impotence, increasing radiance & vitality, love, luck, patience, protection, purifying, sacral chakra, strength, wisdom. Amber is also good for empaths as it wards of negative energy from others.

Amethyst: Creativity, crown chakra, dreams (including curing nightmares), happiness, healing, love, luck, overcoming alcoholism, peace, prosperity, protection – especially against psychic attack, psychic powers, sleep, soothing emotions, stimulating your mind. Amethyst also helps to keep bad habits in check. Types: ametrine, chevron amethyst rutilated amethyst.

Amulet: A magickally empowered object either natural or man-made which is carried or worn as a charm to bring good luck and ward off ill and deflect negative, energies.  

Aphrodite: Greek Goddess of Love, Beauty, Pleasure, Desire & Procreation.

Ares: Greek God of War, son of Zeus & Hera.

Athame: A magical black handled knife used in ritual.

Aventurine: Eyesight, healing, heart chakra, luck, manifesting, mental powers, money, opportunity, optimism, peace, releasing old patterns, soothing anger, stimulating physical growth, winning. Aventurine can guard against smog, pollution and geographic stress. 

B

Banishing: Releasing, letting go, getting rid of something

Banishing Spell: Performing ritual steps to achieve the above such as burning paper with items written on it you wish to banish/release.

Basil: Use to bring balance to your mind for love, happiness, peace, prosperity and protection. Basil will also prepare you for astral projection and other psychic journeys.

Bay Leaf: Use to enhance your psychic abilties, for protection and getting rid of nasty spirits. For healing, use it to make a tea that will help calm the nerves, cleanse your body of impurities and aid digestion. Or make a poultice with the leaves and berries aand place place ot on your chest to ease colds & flu.

Bell: An altar tool, symbol of the Goddess and rung during ritual to invoke Her.  It is also rung to ward off negative or evil and to evoke good energies.

Beltane: Marks the beginning of Summer. It’s a time welcome the abundance of the fertile Earth.

Black: Black is the colour of the Dark Goddess, and of winter, chaos and the mysteries. It absorbs all colours and – if you use a black and white candle together – it can bring balance. Use black to dispel negativity or return it to the sender, and to help you deal with emotional stress and trauma, Use it also as a veil to cloak what you don’t wish others to see. Finally, use it for banishing, divination, hibernation, keeping secrets, New moon ceremonies, protection, rebirth, rest shadow work and wisdom.

Bloodstone: Balancing, masculine and feminine energies, banishing, evil and negativity, base chakra, calming the mind, clarity, cleansing, courage & strength, creativity, dreams, gardening, ground, healing, intuition, nurturing, prosperity,, protection, reducing anger, revitalising, stimulating metabolism & immunity, stimulating success, wealth.

Blue: Blue is the colour of Vishnu, Jupiter and Atlantis. It’s also the colour of the throat chakra and of clear communication. use blue when you’re dealing with officials or to protect your reputation or defeat an enemy. Alternatively, use it to help build lasting relationships. Other associations include authenticity, calm & tranquility, clarity, cleansing, faith, healing, intelligence, justice, limitless possibilities, loyalty, meditation, peace, protection, trust, truth and wisdom.

Blue Moon – A second full Moon in a month that occurs once a year

Boline: White handled knife used in the preparation of magick ingredients such as herbs.

Book of Shadows: A sacred book to record all your magick information, rituals, recipes and more.

Brown: Brown is the colour of Earth, life, Nature magick, root power and affinity with the natural world. Use it to connect with ancestors and access instinctive wisdom. You can also wear it to avoid being misled. Other associations include emotional soothing, friendship, honesty, loyalty, grounding, practicality, protection, regeneration, security, support, transformation and trusworthiness.

C

Carnelian: Accelerating healing, balancing energy, banishing apathy, breaking bad habits, communication, courage, creativity, determination, endurance, fertility, healing arthritis & lower back pain, joy, love, motivation, peace, positivity, prosperity & good luck, protection – especially of the home, sacral chakra, stabilising, success. Carnelian can help to overcome the trauma of abuse and help you to make positive choices for yourself. Types: orange, pink orange, red, scarlet.

Cast circle: To create a safe and sacred space with energy.

Chalice: A cup (usually a fancy one) that can be used to represent Goddess and the water element in your rituals.

Charcoal disc: A piece of circular shaped charcoal you can light and use to burn herbs/incense on.

Cinnamon: Use to raise your spiritual vibration and stimulate clairvoyance. It also draws love, happiness & prosperity, and will increase a male’s passion. For healing, make a tea to stimulate you digestive system and relieve upset tummies.

Citrine: Alignment, alleviating nightmares, attraction, cleansing & regenerating, comfort, concentration, confidence, creativity, detoxifying the blood, digestion, easing depression, easing fears & phobias, emotional balance, enthusiasm, fast money, motivation, prosperity, protections, psychic powers, releasing negative qualities, removing cellulite, self-expression, solar plexus chakra, spiritual growth, stabilising, success, truth. Coral: Base chakra, calming emotions, community, connecting with ocean energy, friendship, gardening, healing – especially for bones, heightening intuition & opening imagination, honesty, optimism, passion, peace, positivity, protection – especially when travelling over water, regulating menstruation, releasing unhealthy thoughts, strengthening visualisation skills, transformation, wisdom. Types: black blue, brown, red.

Coriander: Use to attract fertility, good health, love and peace and to enhance clairvoyance and divination skills. Coriander can also induce passion and invoke protection.

Curse: A spell to invoke harm upon another.  A conscious direction of negative energy toward a person, place, or thing.

Deity: Divine Being.

Deosil: Clockwise.

Devotional: A commitment to a practice, a series of tasks performed over days/weeks/months/years.

Dill: Use for love, luck, lust, money and protection. It will also bring inner understanding during vision quests. Place dill in a sachet and hang it over a baby’s cot for protection or use the sachet in a bath to make you irresistible to your lover.

Eggs: Symbolise fertility, growth

Eggshells: Crushed and powdered – use for protection spells or to symbolise fertility 

Ereshkigal: Ancient Sumerian Goddess of the Underworld, associated with death and the afterlife. Sister to Inanna.

Eurynome: Greek Goddess of water, meadows, joy and ecstasy 

F

Fluorite: Balancing energy, calming, cleansing, concentration, creativity, discovering your divine purpose, healing, improving balance – both mentally & physically, making decisions, mending your aura, mental strength & clarity, neutralising negative energy, past-life peace, positivity, regression, soothing emotions, technology, third eye chakra. Types: blue green, rainbow, yellow.

Freyja: Norse Goddess of Love, Beauty, Fertility, War.

Frigg: Wife of Odin. Norse Queen of the Aesir, can see into the future.

Full Moon – Moon energy and cosmic powers are at their peak at this time

G

Ghyldeptis: Native American Goddess of the forest. She represents Synthesis/Wholeness.

Gold: Gold is associated with the Sun and sun gods like Apollo. Use it for connecting with your higher self, as well as increasing confidence, optimism and positivity. Alternatively, use it to bring money & material wealth, prosperity & abundance, recognition and success. Other associations include achievement & triumph of all kinds, ambition, attraction, extravagance, health, healing, magick and warmth.

Green: Green is the colour of Mother Earth, the Green Man and spring. This means it’s associated with balance, gardening, growth, Nature & Nature Magick. It is also the colour of the heart chakra and of Venus. In this realm, it’s associated with attraction, emotions, love – especially new love and unconditional, universal love – and harmony between the head and the heart. Other associations include abundance & prosperity, deciphering right from wrong, happiness, healing, hope & promise, money, new beginnings, positivity, renewal & rebirth, peace-making, tranquility and youth. Wear green when you need help with something.

Grey: Grey is the colour of neutrality, stability and the ability to be unemotional. Use it to calm someone with a tendency to be impulsive or to help you accept change. Also use grey for acceptance, composure, dignity, endurance, glamour magick, and respect, or for patience when you’re waiting to gather details for a situation. Team grey with green when you’re applying for a loan or asking for a pay increase.

Guardians: Each direction has a Guardian that represents the qualities of that direction and who you can ask to attend your magick ritual for guidance and protection. (Please note: in the North the directions and representations are different)

H

Heatproof Container: A receptacle such as a cauldron, saucepan or metal bowl that is safe to put hot/burning things in.

Hematite: Absorbing negative energy, alleviating worry & stress, anchoring to Earth, balancing and centring, blood purifying, calming, clearing anxiety, confidence, cooperation, divination, energising, focusing, grounding, healing, helping the ascension process, manifesting protection, seeing the positive side of things.

Hestia: Greek Goddess of Hearth, Home, Family.

Hex: Hexes send strong negative energy to the target. They usually last for a set duration of time or until the target learns their lesson. 

I

Imbolc: Is the celebration of the beginning of Spring falling between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox.

Inanna: An ancient Sumerian Goddess associated with duality, love, warfare, fertility and beauty. Sister to Ereshkigal. 

Incense: A blend of herbs, flowers and resins ground together to create an energy or intention (or sometimes used just cause they smell nice). What I describe here is a hand crafted powdered incense, you can buy stick incense just about anywhere – a lot of these can contain chemicals so check for safety first.

Indigo: Indigo is associated with the third eye chakra, intuition and connecting with the cosmos. Use it in meditation to go deeper, or for tapping into your psychic and telepathic abilities. Other associations include midnight magick, higher conciousness and wisdom.

J

Jade: Circulation, dreams, emotional healing, friendship, gardening, going deep spiritually, good luck, harmony, healing – especially for the liver & kidneys, heart chakra, love, meditation, money & wealth, prosperity, protection, releasing negative thoughts & patterns, soothing & calming skin, stabilising, vitality & longevity, wisdom. Types: black, blue, brown, lavender, orange, red, purple, white, yellow.

Jasper: Aligning the chakras, courage, grounding & Centring, healing – excellent for recuperation, heart chakra, fertility, improving relationships, increasing physical energy, justice, nurturing, protection – particularly from physical harm and when travelling, raising vibration, restful sleep, stability, strength, tranquility, warmth, wisdom. Jasper may also help to treat disorders of the kidney, spleen & liver. Types: brown, bumblebee, green, leopard, ocean, picture, red, yellow.

Jinx: A spell to bring bad luck.

Juniper Berries: Love & attraction, clarity, good luck, visions, wisdom, blessings, purification, protection, boundaries and standing firm

Juno: Patron Goddess of Rome and ‘Queen of the Gods’, associated with love, marriage, childbirth and protection

Jupiter: Roman God of the sky and thunder, he is ‘King of the Gods’

Kali: Hindu Goddess of creation and destruction, savage in war and protectress of mothers and children.

Keys: Associated with Hekate, use on your altar or in spellwork to symbolise unlocking doors, roads or portals

L

Labradorite: Stone of magick, increases psychic ability, raises consciousness, intuition and metaphysical wisdom, protection, deflects negative energies, helps gain access to Akashic records.

Lammas (Lughnasadh): Is the festival of the first harvest. It is held halfway between the Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox.

Lavender: Use for clarity, fertility, love, protection, purification, visions and wishes. It’s also an aid for peace and sleep and a treatment for headaches and digestion.

Litha: Is the celebration of Midsummer and the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year.

M

Mabon: Is the time of the Autumn Equinox and the harvest winding down. The darkness starts to take over from light and the days grow shorter.

Malachite: Abundance, balancing moods, business success, childbirth, clearing & activating all chakras, connecting to Nature, dreams, easing menstrual cramps, empathy, energy clearing, expression, fresh starts, healing, heart chakra, love, lowering blood pressure, opening, peace, personal growth, power, protection, removing blockages, removing pollution, resolving abuse trauma, tapping into warrior energy, transformation.

Moon Book: A notebook or journal where you do your magickal ‘working out’ for example: working out magickal recipes and spells.

Moonstone: Balancing women’s cycles, boosting. business, calming, connecting to the Divine Feminine, crown chakra, digestion, divination, easing stress, gardening, good luck, growth, inspiration, intuition, love, Moon magick, new beginnings, patience, protection, psychic powers, reflecting, releasing fluid retention, sleep, soothing emotional imbalances, strength, success, youth. Types: blue, brown, green, grey, rainbow, white, yellow.

Mortar and Pestle: A bowl with a handheld implement for grinding herbs, flowers and resins.

Mugwort: Mugwort is a very ancient herb for healing magick and divination. It is a good alternative to sage in smudge sticks for cleansing and clearing. For healing, mugwort can help digestion, insomnia and help cleanse the liver.

Obsidian: Absorbing negative environmental energies, clearing emotional baggage, divination, grounding, growth, healing, peace, prophecy, protection, psychic cleansing, relieving stress, scrying, self-reflection, shadow work, shielding against negativity, spiritual communication, truth. Odin: All-Father of the Norse Pantheon. God of Death, Wisdom, Poetry & Magick.

Onyx: Absorbing negativity, base chakra, confidence, defensive magick, facing fears, grounding, inner work & shadow journeys, meditation, opening chakras, physical strength & stamina, protection, public speaking, releasing/letting go – especially of negative thoughts, support during grieving. Types: black, brown, colourless, green, pink, red.

Oracle Cards: A divinatory tool consisting of a set of cards that can offer you guidance. They are different to tarot in that they usually have prompt words and/or a brief description of what they mean on the card. They come in literally thousands of designs and themes and are easy to purchase from new age shops or online.

Orange: Orange is associated with the sacral chakra and with abundance, fertility, material gain & success. Use it for overcoming challenges, removing blocks and bringing projects to fruition. Emotionally, orange is the colour of joy & happiness. It brings a positive outlook, helping you to recover from grief & despair, and uplifting & revitalising you. Use it to help release abandonment issues, bring warmth to your relationship and help you to communicate in social situations. Other associations include acceptance, attraction, comfort, creativity, health, motivation, opportunity, pleasure, self-esteem, sexuality and feeling or offering welcome.

Oregano: Use for happiness & joy, luck, protection, tranquility, to bring visions and to deter troublemakers. Also use oregano in love spells, both to attract and to let go. For healing, it soothes digestion, nervous issues and coughs. Add to a bath to relax muscles, or drink in a tea to soothe toothache.

Ostara: celebrates the Spring Equinox, when flowers start to bloom and new life begins.

Otherworld: Another realm in which dwell magical beings such as faeries, elves, sprites, goblins, nymphs, salamanders, pixies and so many more.

P

Pantheon: The Deities, Gods & Goddesses of a particular people or religion Eg: The Norse Pantheon.

Parsley: Use for divination, fertility, good luck, happiness, health, lust & passion, protection, purification, strength and vitality. Also use to communicate with other realms and in rituals to honour those who’ve passed. For healing, use to treat urinary and kidney ailments. Make a compress to soothe swelling and puffiness.

Pentagram/Pentacle: A 5 pointed star representing Earth, Air, Fire, Water & Spirit. A symbol used to represent unity and protection. When the pentagram is encircled it becomes a Pentacle.

Pink: Pink is the colour of Venus and the heart chakra, in this realm, it’s associated with affection, compassion, harmony, love – especially self-love and unconditional, universal love – and romance. Other associations include comfort, femininity, friendship, gentleness, healing – both emotionally and generally, peace, reconciliation & resolving conflict, softness and warmth. Use pink in blessing for a baby girl.

Poseidon: Greek God of the Sea, Storms, Horses & Earthquakes.

Purple: Purple is the colour of royalty and is worn by deities, kings and queens and is sacred to Osiris and also relates to Jupiter. It’s the colour of the crown chakra, spirituality, spiritual awareness and the higher self, Physically, it’s associated with clairvoyance, connecting with the ancient ones, gaining the “sight” or other psychic abilities, magick, mystery, receiving divine wisdom, trusting your inner voice and understanding dreams. More mundane associations include dealings with the government, finding your life purpose, forgiveness, intelligence, justice & truth.

Q

Quartz: Known as the Universal Crystal due to it’s multitude of uses and types. Work with it for amplyfying energy, balancing and harmonising, boosting self esteem, channelling, cleansing and energising all chakras, clearing negativity, contacting those who’ve passed, crown chakra, expanding consciousness, growth, healing, lifting vibration, love, manifesting, meditation, power, prosperity, protecting your aura, psychic powers, soothing migraines, success, transformation, transmuting energy. Quartz is also an amplifier so is good to use with other crystals.

R

Raising power: To raise/add energy to your spell or magickal working. This can be done by drawing up energy (like from the Earth or cosmos), drumming, chanting, singing, playing singing bowls – anything that increases the energy that can then be channelled into your magick.

Red: Red is associated with masculine energy, summer and thee root chakra. Use it to stop something or for banishing spells that involve fire. Red is the colour of blood, Earth, energy, grounding, safety, & Stability. Yet at the same time, it’s also the colour of anger & rage, determination, fire, passion, power, and sexual energy and lust. Use red for action, confidence, courage, energy, expansion, leadership, life force, motivation, renewal of life, strength & survival.

Rhiannon: Welsh Goddess of fertility, sovereignty and transformation.

Rosemary: Use for attraction, intellect and memory, love, protection and purification. Also use it to deter thieves, dispel jealousy, encourage fidelity, and to remember past lives & dreams. Rosemary makes a wonderful hair tonic, can increase circulation and can also relieve aches and pains.

Rue: Rue is often used for hex breaking and for warding off the evil eye. It is also a classic herb for protection magick.

Runes:  Are an alphabet or writing system that were created by Norse God Odin. Also used as a divinatory tool for centuries believed to possess magickal powers.

S

Sacral Chakra: Of the 7 main chakra’s the sacral is the second. It’s bright orange in colour and it’s function: Rules your relationship to everything outside of yourself. Also rules your personal relationships, money, sexuality, joy, self-nurturing, pleasure, creativity, laughter.

Sage: Use for cleansing, granting wishes, healing, longevity and immortality, prosperity, protection and wisdom. Also use it to relieve grief & sadness, and to build courage and strength. For healing, use sage as a gargle for a sore throat or to boost insulin.

Salamander: Fire Spirit associated with healing, change and transformation.

Samhain: pronounced as ‘Sow-enn” means Summer’s end. It is the Pagan New Year. Samhain falls halfway between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice (Yule).

Silver: Silver is associated with the Moon, so use it for Moon Magick – especially for harnessing the intuitive powers of the Moon. For the same reason, use it when doing the Charge of the Goddess or for any other feminine magick. Additionally, this colour can help lovers open their hearts and help you to open yourself to the possibility of love. Silver is also associated with money and bringing money in quickly, and can also help with releasing and cleansing negative energy. Psychically, use silver for astral travel, dreams, visions, personal illumination and revealing your potential. Other associations include seeing through illusions, as well as emotions, endurance, fluidity, freedom, meditation, mystery, peace, reality, restoring balance and tidal magick.

Smudge Stick: A bundle made of tree parts, plants, herbs and/or flowers that’s been bound together to create a stick. Once the stick is dried it can be burnt to create a cleansing smoke you can use in your rituals or to cleanse your home.

Sodalite: Balancing metabolism, clairvoyance, communication, confidence, easing panic attacks, expressing feelings, healing, heart & throat chakras, inspiration, intuition, meditation, peace, positive self-esteem, positivity, rational thought, regaining composure, relieving throat issues, safe travel, self-trust, soothing disagreements, truth, wisdom, writing.

Thor: Norse God of War & Thunder.

Thyme: Use to inhance clairvoyance and cure nightmares and for divination and protection. Also use it for courage, cleansing, consecration, happiness, healing, love, magick and money. For healing, use thyme as a cough remedy, or to aid digestion and deal with internal parasites.

Tiger’s Eye: Alleviating anxiety, awareness, base chakra, business aid, confidence, courage, creativity, detoxifying, divination, emotional balance, energy, focus & mental clarity, growth, home, harmony, indight luck, money, powerful protection – especially from psychic attacks, quick thinking, reducing cravings, resolving problems, supporting you in putting yourself out there, truth. Wand: A magickal tool used to cast circle and direct energy.

White: White represents the Goddess, the ancient mother, and devotion to the divine and the feminine mysteries. It’s also the colour of the crown chakra. Use white for clarity, decreasing anxiety, forgiveness, freedom, goodwill, health, illumination, initation, liberation, love, neatness & cleanliness, new beginnings, perfection, purity & purification, simplicity, spirituality & unity.

Xenglossia: A psychic phenomenon whereby a person displays knowledge of an identifiable language  which he /she has never had the opportunity to learn.

Xylomancy: A type of divination using Twigs (wood).

Y

Yarrow: Herb used in rituals for protection, love, marriage, courage, divination, removing negativity, boundaries and warding.

Yellow: Yellow is also associated with the Sun and the Solar Plexus chakra. It’s the colour of balance, business smarts, intellect, learning and intellectual achievement, and the mind. Yule: Yule/Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year. It is a celebration of the return of the Sun. After the longest night, the nights start to get shorter and shorter.

Z

Zeus: Greek King of the Gods, God of the Sky and Thunder, Ruler of Mont Olympus.

Zodiac: Consisting of 12 astrological signs group into four natural elements. Earth, Air, Fire & Water.
